Phone buying guide:
Which phone brand is best?
Each brand comes with its own unique features and characteristics, for example, Apple exclusively uses IOS software which is renowned for great usability and security. Whilst android phone brand Samsung has a reputation as an innovative brand with phones such as the flip which features foldable glass. Huawei is renowned for top quality built-in cameras whilst OnePlus is known for incredible specs at affordable prices. Each brand has its own unique offering and we recommend looking into the brand before buying.
How much phone storage do I need?
Storage options can range heavily, and can also significantly alter the price. So how do you know which is best for you and whether it’s worth the price increase? Well, we will quickly break down some of the typical sizes of activities so you can better understand what is best for you:
How much phone storage is taken up by videos?
Videos can vary depending on the camera but on average: 4K videos can take around 300MB per minute, Full HD video can take around 100MB per minute and 8K videos can take around 600mb per minute. Therefore someone who films in full HD can get around 10 mins of footage in a GB whilst someone filming in 8K might not get more than two minutes per GB.
How much phone storage is taken up by photos?
Photos may vary depending on the camera but on average each picture takes around 5MB.Therefore an occasional photographer can get around 200 photos out of 1GB, whilst an avid snapper would need around 30GB for 6,000 pics.
How much phone storage is taken up by games?
Can vary between 40MB-1GB and even more. Apps hugely vary, as you can find simple apps such as calendars and social media to complex apps such as huge games or video editing software. Depending on how much you like to use apps to enhance your daily life, we recommend keeping around 20GB-40GB aside for apps.
As most smartphone operating systems can take anywhere from 4-10GB storage capacity, we would suggest that 8-16GB phones are only ideal for those who use their phones for very basic functions such as phone calls, messages and a few photos.
For most users, we would say 64-128GB is the sweet spot. Why not 32GB? Well as the phone nears its full capacity, it begins to slow down. So 64GB will give you a great amount of storage whilstl running at its optimal speed. You can enjoy storage space for years to come, whether that’s for saving precious memories with photos or videos, staying entertained with movies and games or improving daily life with calendars, health apps, maps and more.
Meanwhile a 128GB Phone on average can give you 900 pictures, 60 mins of UHD videos, 1000 songs, 20 films and over 1000 apps. Making it a future-proofed phone that’s sure to offer you space for years to come. Anything over 128GB is best for gamers, movie fanatics and photographers who shoot in high definition.
What is 5G on mobiles & which mobiles have 5G enabled?
5G is the latest standard for broadband as the successor to 4G, allowing us to do more on the go with faster speeds. So now streaming a movie on the bus or loading an important document when out and about is faster than ever.
Here at Box, we have a dedicated page for 5G enabled phones so you can easily find a phone that will offer you super-fast internet speeds for now and the future.
Which phone camera is best for me?
As smartphones develop, we have seen some incredible improvements when it comes to built-in cameras. For example, the Huawei P30 Pro has a 32MP front camera and a quadruple 40MP, 20MP and 8MP camera. Similarly, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 40MP Selfie Camera and the iPhone 12 Pro Max has features such as large sensors, stabilization and triple 12MP cameras.
Displays
Here you can find displays in a range of sizes and resolutions. Whilst Full HD is ideal for most users, Quad HD can offer incredible sharpness, making it perfect for larger screens.
What other features can I find?
You can find awesome features across our smartphone page such as wireless charging and fast charging as well as seamless compatibility with wireless headphones and smartwatches. You can even find rugged phones which offer better protection against dust, drops and moisture for peace of mind at work.
