There are various types of gaming keyboards available to suit every need:

  2. Tenkeyless Gaming Keyboards - a TKL keyboard features everything from high quality gaming keyboards without the tenkey number pad.
  3. RGB Gaming Keyboards - one of the most popular gaming keyboard types, RGB mechanical keyboards feature incredible lighting customisation for a stylish finish to your PC setup.
  4. Wireless Gaming Keyboards - these keyboards feature everything in the above types but in wireless form.
  5. 60% Keyboards - if you can’t fit a full size keyboard into your setup or simply prefer a smaller device, these 60% TKL mini gaming keyboards are an excellent choice.

Types of Keyboard Switches

There are are two switch types available that boast different features:

Rubber Dome Switches

This type of switch uses an integrated rubber dome under each keycap. When pressed, it pushes down on a membrane layer which creates an electrical signal to register a keypress. This is a low noise option that is usually found on the best cheap gaming keyboards. The lower durability of the keys does put off some gamers from this option.

Mechanical Switches

Mechanical keyboards use individual spring-loaded switches that when pressed make contact with the circuit board. These switches are popular with gamers due to the increased durability and build quality alongside its fast responses and tactile feedback. With the many types of mechanical switches available, they are the switch of choice for many pro gaming keyboards. The higher costs and noise levels of mechanical keys aren’t for every user, however.

Types of Mechanical Switches

There are many types of mechanical switches available, but some of the more common ones include:

Cherry MX Red

Functioning in a linear manner, Cherry MX Red needs a little force on the actuation point before they’re registered on the PC. The lightweight switch lacks a tactile bump to let the user know the switch has made contact with the circuit board.

Cherry MX Black

The Black switch also requires a little more force in the way of actuation when registering its click in the middle of the keypress. This means you can experience faster typing because the switch begins to return to normal state before reaching the bottom of the press.

Cherry MX Blue

The Blue switch is popular for its loud click sound because of its high actuation point. This tactile feedback is popular with gamers and typists alike.

Cherry MX Brown

The Brown features a soft tactical bump in the middle of a press and a faster point of registration means less travel time. This type is liked by gamers as there’s almost no noise with every keypress.

Cherry MX Clear

The Cherry MX Clear features a similar feedback to the Brown while offering a better tactile bump and a higher actuation point. The Clear also features a familiar click sound you’d find on the Blue but is much quieter.

What Gaming Keyboard Should You Buy?

The decision on what gaming keyboard should you buy will depend on your favoured type of setup and how much customisation you prefer. While most gamers prefer wired gaming keyboards, the wireless keyboards also provide a great option also. It will also depend on the budget with top performing keyboards demanding a higher price. With incredible response times, superb customisation and durability, mechanical keyboards are worth the investment to enhance your gaming experience.

No matter which type of keyboard you choose, you will find the features you want on most models. RGB lighting, interchangeable switches, anti-ghosting dedicated media keys and more can be found across the entire range. Browse our selection of cheap gaming keyboard deals and start saving today
